2013年12月2日の朝、伝説的レゲエ・シンガーJunior Murvin（ジュニア・マービン）が、ジャマイカのポート・アントニオにある自宅で亡くなりました。64歳でした。彼は糖尿病を患っており、その進行に苦しめられていたようです。
Junior Murvinの代表曲は、1976年リリースの「Police and Thieves」（邦題：ポリスとコソ泥）。

この「Police and Thieves」は、リリースの翌年、イギリスのパンク・バンドThe Clash（ザ・クラッシュ）がカバーし、世界的にも知られることとなりました。
その他代表曲は、「Miss Kushie」「Cool out Son」「I’m In Love」「Bad Man Posse」「Muggers in the Street」など。
ジャマイカン・オールディーズをたどれば、Junior Murvinは避けては通れません。多くのヒット曲を生み出した訳ではありませんが、レゲエ史の中において重要なアーティストの一人です。心よりご冥福申し上げます。

1990年代は、ダンスでもアーリータイムにJunior Murvin「Police and Thieves」がプレイされていたのですが、そういえば最近は耳にしません。現場で聞いたのはいつ以来だろ？久しぶりにサウンドシステムの大音量で堪能したいです。惜しい方を亡くしました。
